Evening Class: Watercolour Metaphysics

29 May 2025
6:00 pm
-
8:30 pm
£25

Explore the metaphysical beauty of watercolour painting as a mark-making technique to document patterns from your life and dreams.

Inspired by Barbara Steveni and the Fluxus artists she collaborated with, we’ll use watercolour as a pathway to abstraction both as a means of expression and as a way to celebrate the patterns and rhythms that shape our thoughts and daily lives.

No painting experience necessary! This session introduces basic watercolour techniques and new approaches to abstraction. It’s an invitation to slow down, reflect, and notice beauty in the smallest details, all while sharing the process in a welcoming environment.

Discover more about Barbara Steveni and the Fluxus artists, and their connections to Zen Buddhism below.

This is the second of three evening classes inspired by our current exhibition Barbara Steveni: I Find Myself. Tickets are sold per session to keep things flexible, but we encourage you to attend all three if you can!

We offer a range of facilities to ensure we are accessible to visitors. Please click here to find out more about visiting Modern Art Oxford. If you have any questions about your visit, please get in touch at info@modernartoxforg.org.uk.

Barbara Steveni’s work, while not formally part of the Fluxus movement, shares thematic ties with both Fluxus and Zen Buddhism. Fluxus, an experimental art movement from the 1960s and 70s, blended art with everyday life, challenging traditional boundaries and promoting a playful, minimalistic approach. Steveni’s focus on integrating art into non-art contexts mirrors Fluxus’s goal of breaking down these barriers. Additionally, her emphasis on process and contextual thinking aligns with Zen Buddhism’s focus on mindfulness, simplicity, and the transformative potential of everyday moments.
