Art on the Out: Artist Residencies from our Archive
Discover Modern Art Oxford’s history of artist placements and projects that took artists beyond the traditional gallery or studio setting.
In response to Barbara Steveni: I Find Myself, Art on the Out explores the many artist residencies facilitated by Modern Art Oxford, inspired by the work of the APG. Co-founded by Steveni, The Artist Placement Group (APG) championed the role of artists within organisations, highlighting their potential to pioneer change and progression. This exhibition brings together archival materials from the 1980s and 1990s showcasing residencies in schools, hospitals and occupational therapy centres. These projects were deeply participatory, fostering collaboration between artists and students, teachers, prisoners, and patients.
Residencies often began with a practical goal – enhancing the site itself – but evolved into opportunities for alternative learning and creative exploration. However, working within structured institutions presented challenges, as spontaneous creativity had to contend with rigid schedules and institutional bureaucracy. Modern Art Oxford played a crucial role in bridging the gap between artists and institutions, securing funding, and ensuring these residencies had lasting impact.
