When and why are you closed in summer 2024?

Modern Art Oxford will be closed to the public from 27 May to November 2024 as our ground floor spaces go through a transformational refurbishment. This will create a completely redesigned welcome area, a new ground-floor gallery, an artist-designed café and an expanded Creative Space. We will be keeping visitors informed about our progress on social media and via our newsletter.

What is your current exhibition?

Modern Art Oxford is currently closed for refurbishment. Please visit our What’s On page for up to date information about our current exhibitions, related events and online programme. Please note, we are a gallery with no permanent collection. For this reason, when an exhibition ends there is often a 3-week period where the Shop and Café are open but our galleries are closed as they are prepared for our next exhibition.

Is the gallery wheelchair accessible?

Yes! Modern Art Oxford’s public spaces are set over three floors, and we have stair-free access to all our floors. The entrance on St Ebbe’s Street is at street level, and there is a platform lift at the Pembroke Street entrance. Our passenger lift is located in the Café and goes to the galleries and the basement. The lift dimensions are 130cm wide by 140cm deep (and 230cm high). The clear door opening is 85cm wide, and the max weight in the lift is 800kg (8 persons). Find out more on our Access page.

Do you have a hearing loop?

There are induction loop units in the Shop and Cafe areas to aid communication with visitors.  Find out more on our Access page.

Do you have disabled toilets?

We have an accessible toilet in the basement – please use the lift to access it. All other toilets are on the ground floor down 3 steps adjacent to the Shop.  Find out more on our Access page.

If you have any other questions about access to the gallery ahead of your visit, please get in touch on 01865 722733 or email info@modernartoxford.org.uk

Can children visit?

Yes! Children and young people are always welcome at Modern Art Oxford. As well as our galleries, we also have regular activities and workshops specially designed for young visitors, including sensory play, Young Creatives Socials and more!

When you visit the gallery, children and their families can ask to borrow a free activity backpack, and fill out an activity sheet. You’re also welcome to visit the Studio, where you’ll find opportunities for hands-on artmaking.

Am I allowed to visit the gallery with a large group?

We offer tours for groups of more than 10, but we ask that you contact us in advance of your visit so we can ensure we can accommodate you. Visit our Group Bookings page for more information.

Where can I park?

Where possible, we encourage a car-free visit to Modern Art Oxford, however you can find details of Oxford car parks at www.oxford.gov.uk/carparks. There are also three parking spaces for blue badge holders in close proximity to the gallery entrance on St Ebbe’s Street. Spaces are available on a first come, first served basis. Find out more about getting here

How much does an exhibition ticket cost?

Tickets to most of our exhibitions are free. Every 12-18 months we charge for a show, ticket prices and how to book will be visible on our website when we publicise our next ticketed exhibition.

I have booked a ticket for an event but not received an email, what do I do?

If you have booked a ticket but have not received a confirmation, we recommend that you first check your junk mail in case it has been directed there. If you still have no confirmation from us of your booked tickets, please contact us by emailing info@modernartoxford.org.uk or calling 01865 722733, and we will confirm your booking for you and resend your tickets.

How Can I Support Modern Art Oxford?

Anyone can become a Friend or Supporter. There are different levels of support, all of which enable Modern Art Oxford to deliver a world class, inclusive and inspiring artistic programme. In return, you’ll receive a range of benefits throughout the year, such as free entry to ticketed exhibitions for themselves and a guest.

You can also make a one-off donation, or join our team of volunteers

Thank you for your support!

How do I make a complaint or send you feedback about my visit?

If you have any feedback on your visit to the gallery or on any of our online programming, we recommend you get in touch with us via our Contact page.

Do you offer work experience or placements?

We have various opportunities throughout the year, including paid placements for students at Oxford Brookes and the University of Oxford. Please visit our Careers page for information on our most recent vacancies, or our Volunteer page if you would like to start volunteering today.

We offer regular Young Creatives Socials for young people aged 16-18, which meet Gatsby Benchmarks 5 and 6, and count as placements when you participate through Speakers for Schools. Find out more by emailing creativelearning@modernartoxford.org.uk.

How are you funded?

Modern Art Oxford is an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation, and receives funding from Oxford City Council, but it also relies on the generosity of individuals, trusts and foundations and corporate funders. This support enables a bold and inclusive artistic programme that ensures access to world-class exhibitions, innovative digital content and inspiring creative learning projects for audiences of all backgrounds, ages and abilities.

To find out more about supporting the gallery, volunteering, or joining as a Friend, please visit our Support page.

Can I make a submission for an exhibition or project at the gallery?

Modern Art Oxford’s exhibition programme is devised by the gallery’s curatorial team and is planned up to two years in advance, with exhibitions and projects arising from direct invitations to artists and institutions. We are rarely able to accommodate unsolicited proposals for projects and exhibitions.

If you would still like to make a submission, please visit our Contact page and select ‘Project/exhibition submission’. We receive a high number of submissions and therefore cannot provide feedback on all individual submissions.
