Film-making in lockdown – Young artist Jude reflects on the City as Studio online residency

Jude joined our City as Studio online film-making residency in February 2021. In the midst of a national lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, the group met only online and explored DIY film-making from the confines of their own surroundings.

Read about what Jude learnt during the residency, and how she used found objects and sounds to create her films.

Words and films by Jude

My experience being on the Modern Art Oxford City as Studio online residency has been really inspiring. I learnt a lot of skills such as different shots I could take and how to create stop motion animation films. I have already applied these skills to a recent film I have created which largely increased its quality.

Using the different filming techniques I learnt, I was able to make my film more entertaining and engaging for the viewer and it was apparent that my filming has improved.

Personally, the most important lesson the residency has taught me is that you can use anything your surroundings contain to your advantage! On the day when we met Poppy Tibbets, we completed an activity in which we had to go around our house and collect any sounds we could find. I expected to find five or so, but I found over thirty and most of them came from my bedroom! This made me realise just how many recourses I have at my fingertips which in turn expanded my imagination when creating films.

Overall, my experience with Modern Art Oxford on their online residency was very enjoyable and eye-opening. I have learnt so much and have gained even more of a passion for creating films. Additionally, all the instructors were very kind, friendly, encouraging and considerate of the fact that we had to make these films within our homes in a short space of time. I have also made wonderful friends on this course who are very kind and have so much potential – it made me realise just how many talented people are out there! Therefore I am very grateful to my instructors for supporting me and I am grateful to Modern Art Oxford for giving me the opportunity to take part in City as Studio.
