Young Visiting Artists
Modern Art Oxford offers a range of creative projects and experiences for young people between the ages of 8-16 that encourage confidence and participation in art galleries.
Our current project is in collaboration with Children Heard and Seen, a charity supporting children who are impacted by parental imprisonment who provide targeted activities in the children’s homes and community.
The project aims to show young people what it’s like to work as professional artists within a gallery setting, highlighting that the arts are a viable career option.
Modern Art Oxford’s summer 2019 Young Visiting Artists project, Sites of Curiosity, was a fun and thought-provoking mobile architecture project in collaboration with Children Heard and Seen. Participants worked towards creating a mobile artist-in-residence kit through a series of creative workshops, using art as a vehicle for building resilience, self-esteem and confidence.
‘This project has been inspired by one of our young visiting artists, age 6, who has attended our regular Saturday sessions over the last 12 months. Observing him play, I saw how he transformed the art materials into a den and safe space. When asked if he needed anything, he replied, “Is this OK? I’m just having a little sleep … I’ll have a blanket and a pillow if you’ve got a minute.”‘ – Emma Titcombe, Sites of Curiosity Lead Artist.
