Volta45 (Bernard Johnson-Tackie) is a Ghanaian born, London based record collector, writer and creative lead of The GoldenStool Project. He’s a widely respected DJ, for his unique style, consisting of a heady mix of jazzy and percussive sounds from Africa, South America, the French Caribbean and beyond. A regular on the European and UK music festival circuit, he’s played parties in Turin to the glorious fields of the Shambala Festival.
During the UK lockdown period, he and team curated a 5 part podcast series, documenting the history of Ghana Highlife music from 1920 to present titled ‘Highlife Music Deconstructed (HMD)’. The HMD series was featured in Song Lines Magazine and Music in Africa (Paris). He also co-compiled Kalita records’ best selling album, Borga Revolution, which was released in summer 2022.
Volta45 has collaborated with various bands and record labels, Soundway Records (Konkoma), Analog Africa, Strut Records, The Kwarmy Band, Balimaya Project to name but a few. Currently he’s working with a Ghanaian Jazz outfit, whose single will be out on his GoldenStool label imprint later on this year.
In this performance, artist Alice Hackney weaves traditions of woodblock printing and European folk dance to explore the grief she sometimes feels for her disabled body. When she is sick, she longs for the outdoors – imagining grass growing into her bedroom through the floor, and the outdoors coming inside to meet her. For this performance, she has carved floorboards with patterns of grass, flowers, weeds and worms that will be printed with dancing feet. The dances and accompanying music take inspiration from Continental European folk practices.
Created in collaboration with dancer and choreographer Robin Gallardo-Parsons from Balfolk Oxford
