Summer holiday family activities at Modern Art Oxford

Visiting us with kids? This summer there are creative activities for all ages to explore at the gallery. Check out the activities below and visit our What’s On page to stay up to date with all that MAO has to offer this summer.

Thursday afternoon drop-in sessions

Every Thursday afternoon from 28 July to 1 September drop in to our Creative Space to join in with interactive creative activities inspired by visionary artist and educator Ruth Asawa.

From potato printing on fabric and baker’s clay, to soap carving and leaf-shaped lino prints, drop by to make your own works of art. Designed for ages 3-10 but open to all. Thursdays, 1-4pm. Free, drop-in. Find out what’s on this week.

Family Activity Backpacks

Pick up a free Family Activity Backpack from the Shop when you visit. Filled with themed sensory activities, the backpacks include a picture book about how Ruth Asawa became an artist, and a selection of art materials.

Just visit the Shop desk or ask a member of staff. Limited availability. Ages 3+

Creative Space

Our Creative Space is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10am-5pm and Sunday 12-5pm. On Saturdays and Sundays our friendly art facilitators are on hand to help you experiment, play, and make your own works of art with materials inspired by our current exhibition Ruth Asawa: Citizen of the Universe. City as Studio: At Home | DIY film-making workshops

Looking to get creative over the summer holidays? You can now take part in City as Studio and learn DIY film-making at home.

Over two self-led workshops, artist Kate Mahony will take you through the process of creating your own short art films on your mobile phone, using what you have around you. Discover how to storyboard, edit films and create your own stop motion animations at home!

Workshops can be accessed at any time and you can complete them in your own time. Click here to sign up and access the free workshops.
