End Period Stigma: a stop motion animation by young artist Poppy

Poppy took part in our City as Studio online film-making residency for ages 16-19 in April 2021. The young artists were encouraged to work with DIY film-making and music-making techniques as ways to explore the issues that matter most to them.

Poppy shares her experience of the residency, and how she used film-making and music to create a film sharing her message about the importance of ending period stigma.

Words and film by Poppy

Hello I’m Poppy, a 17 year old who makes jewellery as my creative outlet, however wanted to experiment with other art forms.

The residency was a completely new experience for me. I had never used any of the phone apps before, particularly the stop motion app. Due to being on Zoom, the residency had to be adapted to accommodate the current situation, however I never felt like I was missing anything. The interactive website meant the daily tasks were manageable and easy to complete. It also meant when i couldn’t come to a meeting due to exams I was able to catch up.

My first film didn’t turn out how I imagined and therefore was scrapped but I found it a useful lesson to understand the apps suggested and how to edit. The second film I made was a stop motion animation which was centred on debunking period sigma. I made the stop motion out of post-it notes with facts.
