Celebrating our amazing volunteers this Volunteers Week

Volunteers Week 2021

This week is National Volunteers Week! We want to say thank you to our incredible team of volunteers for their fantastic contribution to the gallery, and also encourage you to join their team.

Scroll down to hear from some of our volunteers about their experiences at Modern Art Oxford, what it means to volunteer, and getting behind the scenes in an art gallery. They share how they first got involved, some of their favourite moments in the gallery, what they’ve learnt, and why you should sign up too.

Deb chats about where her volunteering journey has taken her, from co-curating a public exhibition at the gallery to getting a freelance position in our Creative Space.

Andrei shares his volunteering journey at Modern Art Oxford, from being in the gallery space to meeting new people and learning new skills.

Ross has been coming to MAO since the 1970s so it’s always been a special place for him. After 25 years working in business, he found it to be the perfect fit for him to do something new, a place to try out lots of things and meet new people.

Since volunteering at MAO, Lillian has co-curated an exhibition, had her work displayed at the gallery and plays an integral part in a community space that she feels is truly important.

Matthew doesn’t live in Oxford but loved visiting the gallery so much that he thought to himself, why not volunteer? You don’t need to commit to really regular volunteering with us. The opportunities can be tailored to what suits you best.

Our Volunteers Programme offers really flexible opportunities to be involved, in whatever way suits you. From learning more about the artworks on display, to meeting people, gaining new skills and being part of a historic and much-loved Oxford community space. Whether you’ve got just a few hours to spare, or you’re looking to be involved on a regular basis, there’s something for everyone. Join us! Start your volunteering journey today. Find out more.

“Going back to study after a lifetime of work was difficult and volunteering has given me back the feeling of being useful and some structure. I have found MAO to be an inclusive and nurturing environment and hope to volunteer well into the future.” – MAO Volunteer
